Treaty Rights Seminar April 22-23 for Federal Agencies

FORT HALL — The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes is sponsoring the 2008 Treaty Rights Seminar on April 22-23 at the Red Lion Inn, in Pocatello.The Seminar is targeted to those federal agencies that have a trust responsibility to the Tribes.

The Tribes sponsor this Seminar to, provide information to the federal agencies to better meet their trust responsibilities, by gaining a better perspective and understanding of the Tribes treaties and history and establishing a dialogue for improved communications and cooperation, on management issues and government-to-government consultation.

The agenda includes presentations on the history of treaties between the U.S. government and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, Tribal governmental structure, panels on consultation between federal agencies and the Tribes, the Tribes and the NEPA process, Tribal Policy Statements, Reserved Treaty Rights and Federal Agency Management Actions, Treaty Provisions for Health, Employment, Agricultural and Education, and discussions/breakout sessions. Invited keynote speakers include Dr. Sherry Hutt, National NAGPRA Program Manager, with the National Park Service, who will present "This Point in Time of Tribal Cultural Recognition."

Other invited speakers include Dr. Patricia Albers who will present the Tribal Treaty History, and Mark Trahant, who is editorial page editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Agencies already registered include US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Idaho National Laboratory, National Park Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Idaho Department of Transportation and Department of Energy.
