The Environmental Waste Management Program Outreach on lead poisoning is targeted towards families who have children 6 and younger and those who have lived in homes dating from 1978 and older. The Program is also designed to educate the tribal members of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe and surrounding communities to be aware that lead is not only in paint but is also in ceramics, furniture refinishing, toys, newsprint and other everyday items.
| What is lead? |
| Lead is a potent nerotoxin which accumulates in soft tissues and bone over time. Lead has the symbol Pb.Lead is a soft, heavy, toxic and malleable poor metal, and is bluish white when freshly cut but tarnishes to dull gray when exposed to air. |

- Advocate the importance of screening among young children, thereby, increasing the number of young children being screened (tested for elevated lead blood levels).
- Promote lead education and prevention awareness regarding childhood lead poisoning.
- Increase community participation and leadership in the coalition.
- Raise the level of community/grass roots involvement in dealing with environmental, political, and legislative issues.
- Educate the community on how to reduce or prevent lead poisoning during home renovation.
