FMC Corp. to do further remedial investigations

PHILADELPHIA —FMC Corporation has secured U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval of its workplan to undertake a Supplemental Remedial Investigation (SRI) as its former elemental phosphorus plant in Power County near Pocatello.
It is the second round of environmental investigations and evaluation of potential clean up alternatives under the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). The supplemental investigation is being done to characterize former operating areas of the site in order to identify appropriate remedial activities. This phase of the SRI fieldwork will continue through the construction season that will end sometime in November.
Additionally, the EPA has provided approval to start work on a Pond 16S Gas Characterization and Ambient Air Monitoring Plan. The proposed schedule for implementation for this sampling project at acapped former pond will run through mid July.
At all of its operations, including closed facilities such as the Pocatello plant site where decommissioning and clean-up are underway, it is the policy of FMC Corporation to work in an environmentally responsible manner that respects its good neighbor relations with federal, state and local governments, neighboringcompanies, and interested organizations and groups.
According to FMC spokesman Paul Yochum, "the Company will keep these local interested parties informed of actions and progress with these important projects. We fully recognize this site has been on the CERCLA National Priority list since 1990 and FMC, along with the EPA, the State of Idaho, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes are now engaged in a process that we hope will facilitate future redevelopment of the site."
